Party Party Party

PAR-TYYYY!

The boys' buddy D turned 1 this week. His mama organized a great party with tons - tons! - of little ones. We headed over to help celebrate & discovered just about the greatest thing evah.

Behold, the Ball Pit!

Birthday boy's there in yellow.

Joseph and Luke pretty much partied like rock stars.

Mom! Mom! Can we get one of these? Please? Please? Pleeeeeease?

It got wild fast with all the little ones. Lots of screams, flying balls, slobber. Verticality was particularly challenging, but the boys made the most of it.

Spontaneous mosh pit

Joseph kept throwing himself backward, submerging into the ball pit. Luke made it his mission to pull all toys within arm's reach in with him.

Freeeebiiiiiird!

Meanwhile Luke got a smooch from a little cutie pie. Either that or she was going in for a little cheek nibble. No worries, Alessandra. I have that same compulsion all. the. time.

Smoooooch

Also at the party, fried chicken! Joseph couldn't get enough. Luke was less convinced but still gave it a whirl, which is more than I can say about the dry boiled chicken I had tried to push on them earlier this week. Should've known. Who doesn't love fried chicken?

Lounging in the pool

Utterly mesmerized by the fan

We had a great time, and it looks like Little D did as well.

Happy birthday, D!

The boys are 8 months, 3 weeks & 2 days old.

Bon Voyage, Daddy

This is going to be a single-parent household for the next 12 days. ::sniff, sniff:: Greg flew off to England this afternoon to spend some QT with his mom and aunt in London. I'm glad he's getting to go, and I know it means a lot to his mom. But we're going to miss him terribly. And I'm sure he's going to miss his boys as well. And maybe me a little too. :)

On the plus side, that meant we had the morning free to spend time with the boys in our pajamas.

Please note this is not to say that the boys and I don't have pajama days all the time. It's just rare that Greg gets to enjoy them as well.

Luckily Mimi drove into town to get a good dose of grand babies and help me tame the wild beasts. Honestly there is no way Greg would be going otherwise. 12 days with two babies all by myself?? Uh-uh. I would die!

Snow Day!

It snowed here in Austin on the boys' 6-month birthday, but nothing like this!

Luke painstakingly chose the musical accompaniment so I will thank you to sit back & appreciate it please.

And it was just sunny & in the 80's two days ago! Texas weather is just awesome, isn't it. :)

I tried bundling the boys up & taking them outside so they could enjoy it first hand, but it was too close to nap time and they weren't having any of it. Plus, Joseph has a bad diaper rash now & is in a particularly foul mood. No frolicking in the snow for us! Oh well.

I did sit them by the window so they could at least check it out.

That occupied them for all of 3 seconds and then it was all oooh, look at this cord! and check out this metal lock thingy! and here's a window! let's SMASH it!

No appreciation for nature, these boys... :)

I could eat them.

My guys are 8 months, 2 weeks and 5 days old.

Little Giants

Have I mentioned how huge my boys are?

Today they are 8 months and 1 week old. And those clothes are sized for 18-month-olds.

Yeah.

You'd never know they were premies, would you?

They're around 23 pounds (10.4 kilos, Ewa!) each right now, and I feel every ounce of it. No wonder I'm turning into a hunchback!

I can't tell you how often people have told us these guys are going to be football players. And every time he hears it, a little piece of their daddy dies inside. Mimi bought these outfits in honor of the sport their daddy will be pushing them to play just as soon as they can kick a ball. It's soccer all the way, baby!

And So It Begins

The boys just got their first love letter!

It was in the form of a Hello Kitty email that read "To: Luke and Joseph Iloveyou!!!!!!!!". From this little red-headed cutie.

HI, ANABELLE!!!!

Let There Be Light!

One of the big problems with our house, as I've seen it, is the fact that our living room is so freakin' dark. It has 3 north-facing windows and one low window on the northeast corner that is partially covered by bushes, which means that not a lot of natural light is shining through most of the day. By the time the sun is even contemplating setting, we have to turn on lamps in order to see what we're doing. On cloudy, rainy days it's hopeless.

We were discussing the possibility of adding skylights when my uncle David mentioned the idea of solatubes. We'd never heard of them, but they sounded interesting so we went to check them out. They're basically these highly reflective tubes that run from your roof, where there is a transparent cover to capture light, through your attic and into your home. The cover on the ceiling is a diffuser so the light is spread throughout the space, rather than just beamed down like a spotlight. They actually transmit a great deal of light without much heat transfer, unlike with skylights. This also means they come with a nice tax credit. Bonus! They're fast to install and relatively cheap. After seeing them in the showroom, we were sold!

So here's a shot of our living room ceiling before...

And three hours later, voila!

We lined them up with the chimney, and at some point we plan to replace that ceiling fan. When we do, we'll also center it between the solatubes.

I don't have a good 'before' picture of how dark our living room used to be, but trust me when I say it was depressing. But check it out!

This is our living room now. The window shades were all closed. Plus it was a cloudy day so it'll be even brighter when our usual sunshine-y skies return. I love it! Huge, huge improvement to our lighting situation.

Thanks for the suggestion, David!

As I mentioned earlier, while holes were being cut into our roof and ceiling, the boys and I were hanging out in the nursery, which admittedly is not something we do often. It turned out great though because the guys were totally preoccupied with the novelty to do much fussing.

Oh, and they've now well and truly mastered the art of holding their own bottles. I'm over my sadness about it because it's actually quite awesome to be able to do stuff while they're happily sucking away.

Man, they look so long in these pajamas, don't they!

Joseph's even so talented that he can do it one-handed.

This boy is cute, but honestly he's also a little lazy. And necessity is the mother of invention, as they say, so he quickly figured out a way to feed himself no-handed. What a clever little munchkin!

Luke, on the otherhand, has the opposite issue. He'd much rather be using his time looking around, grabbing things, kicking stuff. When he eats, he has a tendency to flail and twist that bottle in his mouth this way and that. I don't know. Maybe it tastes better like that.

But enough about breakfast. Let's get back to playing!

Joseph, having a bit of a flat head, secretly envies
Luke's ginormous, round noodle.

Flasher

Note to self: When abruptly interrupting a pumping session to answer the door to strange men, do a bra check!

We are having a couple of solar tubes installed in our living room right now. The boys and I are hanging out in the nursery while the workers are tearing things up. One of the guys knocked on the door to make sure he put on the right filters. Only after I went down there, talked to them, made my choice and got back to the nursery did I realize that half my bra was showing through the neck of my shirt.

Quality.

Deconstruction

You know, it's a great concept. Design a baby booster seat with a top tray that can easily be removed, washed, placed in the dishwasher and popped right back into place.

Except when your baby learns to remove that tray and then becomes obsessed with doing just that during all mealtimes.

Look at the joy on Luke's face. He's obviously much too busy for green beans right now. And so ends the era of the easily washed meal tray. Oh well. It was nice for the week that it lasted.

Gush

I'm late for gym.

Joseph is sleeping in the swing beside me, making little sucking motions with his lips and tongue. Luke is sleeping in my arms with his little head resting on my chest. He stirs, still asleep, and shifts his head before resting it back onto my chest. I look down, and on the right side of his face I see the little red impressions from where his fingers had been pressed up against him. It's so perfect that I can actually make out the little, white outlines of his fingernails and the wrinkles of his knuckles.

And seeing those tiny, perfect details I just feel a rush of love for these guys.

I can miss gym for this.

I can miss most things for this.

Big Boy PJs

This is what happens when Mommy gets behind on the laundry.

The only pajamas left are the big boy pajamas. And, OMG, are they CUTE! :)

Chomp, Chomp

Luke...

Can you show Mommy your little toofers?

No??
Pleeeeease?

Pretty pleeeeease??

Okaaaay, guess I'm going to have to be sneaky about this...

You can run, but you can't hide!

AHAAAA!

Two tiny teeth!!

Okay, Joseph! Your turn!

Mommy's just going to... um... let me just...

Bingo!

You know what. Why don't you be a good boy and just show me.

Ahhh, thank you!

I posted when Joseph's first tooth came in. Luke cut his first about a week later (last Monday) and the second came in this past week-end. So Luke got off to a slightly slower start, but he's making up for lost time in a big way.

Thankfully not too much fussiness with any of these teeth. Maybe my boys are just super TOUGH, like their Mommy. :)

The boys are 7 months, 4 weeks and 1 day old. Eight months on Thursday! Wow...
